Alternatively we offer the students the opportunity to complete the nationally recognised level 3 BtEC extended diploma (3 A level equivalent) in sport.

Excellent facilities.
We have excellent facilities here at the Staffordshire Refereeing Academy. We use the local gym for strength and conditioning training and students on the course will be able to follow the same training programme as a professional referee. We will visit the sport science facilities at the University of Wolverhampton for fitness testing.

Our team.

Steve Martin

EFL Referee (Course Mentor)
"I began refereeing in 2003 in the Wolverhampton Sunday league and West Midlands Regional League. After four years I progressed to the EFL as an assistant referee in 2007. After 5 years as a league assistant I was fortunate enough to reach the referee's list in 2012. I've now refereed over 200 games as an EFL referee and have been professional since 2016". My advice to any young person looking to take up the whistle is always - follow your passion and don't hesitate as it will probably be the best decision you ever make! Football is the number 1 sport in the world for a reason and it really is a pleasure to be a part of it!

Matthew Jones

Referee Development Officer (SFA)
"I am just starting my 6th season as an EFL Assistant Referee, operating on mainly League 1 and League 2. I have officiated on The FA Vase Final at Wembley in 2017 and on three Play Off Semi-Finals in the last 3 seasons. I achieved Level 3 referee when I was refereeing  before becoming a specialist assistant referee, which was the Evo-Stik Premier League, including teams such as Stafford Rangers. I first qualified at 14 years of age in 2005 and within 7 years I was appointed to the EFL as an assistant referee."
Alongside both the academic and sports studies, students will also have the opportunity to take part in:

  • Mentoring by professional referees
  • Sports Science days to test fitness levels
  • Sports nutrition support and advice
  • Use software to analyse their refereeing performances
  • Maximising their refereeing development
  • Gain high quality future careers guidance
